VINTAGE ARCHITECTURE

RHODE ISLAND STATE HOUSE

RHODE ISLAND STATE HOUSE

Providence, Rhode Island

The Rhode Island State House was designed by the noted firm of McKim, Mead & White and erected in 1900. My favorite feature is Independent Man, the gilded statue standing on top of the marble dome. Engraved on the south portico is a passage from the Royal Charter 0f 1663:”To hold forth a lively experiment that a most flourishing civil state may stand and best be maintained with full liberty in religious concernments”.
