EIGHT HUNDRED GRAPES

EIGHT HUNDRED GRAPES

I guess I do not wish to leave the world of Laura Dave’s EIGHT HUNDRED GRAPES– I am reading it for the third time! It is about a girl who runs to the family vineyard after a devastating discovery throws her dreams of wedded bliss into doubt. All is not the same with the family, however and suddenly, she finds herself scrambling to save her father’s legacy and facing a destiny she long believed she did not want. I have such a crush on this book…

US

US

Here’s my summer book- US by David Nicholls. It is about a man in his fifties reckoning with his decades-long marriage to a woman who may be leaving him and his troubled relationship with his teenage son- this while embarking on a disaster-fraught and surprise-ridden Grand Tour of Europe. Delightfully hilarious and unexpectedly poignant…

THE GAP YEAR

THE GAP YEAR

Hey- how come nobody told me about Sarah Bird before? I found myself crying openly (in public) as I read the last pages of THE GAP YEAR and wanting to tell every mother I care about to read it. It is about a defining year in the lives of Cam Lightsey, lactation consultant and suburban misfit, and Aubrey, her dutiful band-geek daughter who turns into a teenage nightmare when local football hero Tyler Moldenhauer enters the picture. So good, funny and resonant…it is now my favorite mother-daughter book ever.

MERMAID

MERMAID

I love fairy tales and find myself unable to resist reimaginings of beloved ones. Carolyn Turgeon’s MERMAID, a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, is mesmerizing me.

STILL LIFE WITH BREAD CRUMBS

STILL LIFE WITH BREAD CRUMBS

My first book of the year is Anna Quindlen’s lovely STILL LIFE WITH BREAD CRUMBS. It is about an iconic female photographer who finds herself at a crossroads, caught between the old pull of her known world and the wild possibilities of a new one. Loved it.
